Our advice on free stuff
The following advice is provided for Christians, their churches and users of the
At Hand Worship Visuals Disc

Web Browser

Get Firefox! The usual Web Browser for the usual PC user running the usual Windows operating system is Internet Explorer.
For Mac users, Safari is your system's standard browser.

Provided you have a recent version of your Web Browser, you may see little reason for changing Browser: You can Click on the Browser names above to find the latest versions.

Alternatively, we recommend Firefox Web Browser for various reasons:
  • The importance of choice:
Internet Explorer is provided free with Windows. It's used by default rather than through choice. As a result, it's by far the most used Web Browser. Our Internet use is dependent on the functionality of the Web Browser we use, which in turn is dependent on decisions made by a single organisation. Their decisions can steer the future development of the Internet.
Deciding to choose an alternative Browser can combat any organisation's ability to dictate how the Internet grows - and what it grows into. Wider choice allows the consumer to make the choices that determine how the Internet will develop.
  • Firefox is available on different computer systems, not just the PC.
  • It's absolutely free!

Broadband Internet Access
Broadband is offered as a fast way to access the Internet but is the speed worth the upgrade from dial-up?

For many people, it's not the speed that moves them to Broadband but the fact that you can be on the computer and people can use the phone at the same time: You get your phone line back! - the speed is a bonus!

We wanted to find a Broadband provider for under £10 a month. What we found was even better:

They say it's free?!...

We checked it out and this is by far the best offer we've found!

  • You wave goodbye to BT and pay the same monthly line rental (now £10.50) to Talk Talk instead.
  • There's £29.99 set-up charge but at the moment you get a free modem
  • You pay just £5.89 a month for upto 40Gig* broadband use and as many evening/weekend UK landline** calls as you like - and even various international calls!
*You'd have to be a serious internet troffer to soak up 40Gig a month!
** Landline 0845 calls etc have their own (at least as good as BT) rates.

We've checked out the offer. Click here to read our TalkTalk broadband review.

Free Web Hosting for Churches and Christians
Search the internet and you'll find lots of companies offering "free" hosting but finding a company that offer a hosting plan you can actually use isn't so easy: There are all kinds of limitations, prohibitions and obligations. Free hosts are rarely upfront about their forced links, banners, and advertising. They don't highlight the restrictions that are often deliberately included to render your site unusable, so that you upgrade to their paid hosting. They keep quiet about their intent to indulge you in spam: "upgrade now - special offer!! - not to be missed else we'll send it twice as often!!".

A common catch with free web hosting is that you're forced to use a web address based on their domain e.g. mychurch.hostname.com or hostname.com/mychurch - promote such an address and you always promote the free host at the same time - furthermore, if you decide to change hosts you are forced to start again, promoting a different web address. It's better to buy your own domain which can be moved from host to host if required. Many free hosts insist that you buy your domain name from them - and you can be sure it won't be at the lowest price! We ruled out free hosts that had such a catch and looked for hosts that allowed you, free of charge, to point an external domain name to your free web space.

So we did a lot of searching, a lot of inverstigating and tried a few of those hosts out. Once we'd tried and tested the best free host we could find, we used their expertise experience and equipment to form Bart Hosting - offering churches and Christians the best free hosting at the best price: $0 !

Powerpoint compatible Presentation software
Many people refer to a Projector and PC as 'The Powerpoint' but you don't need Microsoft's Powerpoint software to project visuals: You don't even need the Powerpoint software to create, edit or display Powerpoint files!
Get Open Office! Open Office is a fabulous piece of software that rivals Microsoft Office and, like the more expensive versions of Office, it includes Presentation Software. Unlike Microsoft Office, Open Office is free!
The Presentation Software in Open Office allows you to create, edit and view .PPT and .PPS (Powerpoint) files.
